The format of resume is the plan of how you are going to arrange or organize your details like skills, education, and work experience in the resume. A format of resume is an important factor in personalizing your resume. Every person has his own style of writing a resume that makes the resume unique. One resume can be distinguished from other with the help of the format.
The format helps the reader to understand the various sections in resume. The recruiter can easily read the resume if a good and clear format is used for writing a resume. Format of a resume helps your resume to stand out in a crowd. You will find different types of format on the internet. Choose a format that will best suit your profile and use it in your resume.
Resume formats are broadly divided into two types.
Chronological format
Functional format
A functional resume format focuses on skills, achievements, and qualifications that you have. The format is skill based. This type of format is not highly appreciated by the recruiters as they feel that a person who has gaps in his/her career history uses this format to hide those. This format is not commonly found but if you need to highlight your potential, you can make use of this format of resume.
The skills and accomplishments are highlighted and hence, placed right in the beginning of the resume. The work history is not emphasized to a greater extent in this format and is placed at the end of resume. In this format, how you did the things with the help of your quality is given more importance than when and where you did those things.
The functional format is suitable in following situations:
It helps if you are changing the track of your career
You are a fresher about to enter the vast land of career
You had taken a gap for while and now trying to re enter the job market
You have worked in different sectors and at various positions
Your skills that did not matter in past, can help you in this job
A chronological format of resume is the most commonly found resume format. This format is quite popular with hiring managers. The format focuses on the career history which is progressive. The format can be easily and read and all the details about work experience are highlighted. In this format the work history is organized in chronological manner. Beginning with the recent work experience and moving backwards.
The chronological resume fully concentrates on work history. A person who has an illustrious career should always go for this type of resume format. Skills, qualifications are given secondary importance in the resume of this kind.
The chronological format is suitable in following situations:
You have a consistent work history with no gaps
You have not changed tracks in your career
All your accomplishments are from recent job experience
You have worked at higher positions in well known organizations.
You want the resume that is typical and acceptable to all.
